Description

This rugged early American tune provides an assertive choral repertoire option during the Lenten season:

“Take up your cross, the Savior said, if you would my disciple be; take up your cross with willing heart, and humbly follow after me.”

Composer Note
“The congregational hymn on which this anthem is based is a favorite at my Cincinnati parish of Calvary Episcopal Church; it is sung fervently during the Lenten season and other times when discipleship and the cross are particularly emphasized. This anthem setting (adapted from a piano solo in my book, Transformations) attempts to capture the assertive, visceral text and tune.”

—Howard Helvey
