Description
What a treasure we have in the historic hymns of the church and what a gift when an arranger helps us hear them in new, fresh ways! Lloyd Larson's setting is almost Copland-esque with his use of quartal harmony, motor rhythms and stark, independent vocal lines. He adds to the drama of the arrangement by reflecting the lyrics in both the accompaniment (the “water” figure in the accompaniment of the 2nd verse) and the harmonization (the surprising minor key of the 3rd verse).
